If you feel you would benefit from counselling but need a time and a place to suit your schedule, online counselling may be ideal for you. It is also a good option if you need support during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. Online counselling is convenient and has been shown to be as effective as face-to-face therapy. If you live further afield, work abroad, travel frequently or have a busy schedule online counselling might be worth considering.
My online counselling service is:
Convenient: therapy can take place in the convenience of your preferred location with no travel time.
Confidential: your discretion is assured through the use of a secure video chat service.
Effective: studies have shown that online treatment is just as effective as face-to-face therapy and that satisfaction among clients has been rated as high. There are many ways in which online counselling is similar to face-to-face work as online counselling still allows for important factors such as real-time communication, verbal cues, eye contact, therapeutic alliance and observations of some body language.
How secure is online counselling?
I prefer to use Zoom for online counselling as it is HIPAA-compliant. It is preferred to Skype or Facetime as its systems allow for a more reliable connection and increased security to ensure your sessions are confidential. Registering to use Zoom is simple and free.
Online counselling has many benefits:
- Busy people can access a high-quality service in a flexible way
- You can access help from a location that suits you
- No travel costs or travelling time
- With international access it is ideal for travellers and those working or living abroad or for clients who move abroad during their therapy but who wish to continue the work
- Easy access to therapy for people with some disabilities or mobility issues
- It provides an excellent option if you don’t live near my clinic but would like to work with me
How an online counselling session works:
Paying: if you book online you will pay for your session at the time of booking; if you book through me I will provide you with payment details
Getting ready: you will need to create a Zoom account in advance of your appointment. It’s a good idea to think about where you will be when the session takes place. It’s important you’re somewhere quiet where you can speak confidentially (e.g. in a room in your home). It’s not possible to conduct online sessions in spaces such as cafes or shared offices.
The session: we each log into Zoom and at the time of your appointment I will call you. Your session begins and takes place as if we were meeting face-to-face.
